I am not by nature a gamer. Gamer in the PC/Console sense, I love to play boardgames. I also love Battlestar Galactica, (in private I’ll even admit a small liking for Caprica.) So having played the BSG boardgame, of which I am a huge fan, I felt compelled to try the BSG MMO from Syfy, that just went live the other day.

Maybe it’s my computer, maybe’s it’s my lack of gaming experience, maybe it just plain sucks, but I had a hard time playing. It seemed clunky, if I can say that from a lack of experience, and really, I have to be a Viper pilot? I understand that we can’t all run the big ships, like in the Star Trek MMO, but I’m not a shooter, I don’t just want to shoot stuff. I’d much rather work on maneuvering my ponderous warship into a position that my mid-ship port cannons could achieve a firing solution on incoming Basestars while trying to launch vipers and shield civilian ships desperately attempting to make the jump to safety.

Instead, I shot this raider, then I shot that one over there, and then the other one behind it, followed by this one, then that one, then the other one, before I shot that one, then this one, and so on.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll find some hidden gem that I missed today and the whole thing will coalesce into a magical and fulfilling experience. Or I’ll just shoot down more raiders.
